The Strategic Approach
Gospel Insight
Christ taught, “Let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil” (Matthew 5:37). This call for clarity and integrity in speech aligns with writing executive summaries: say what matters, say it plainly, and say it truthfully.
Project Roadmap
As a team, you’ll create a clear and powerful Executive Summary to accompany your team case slide deck and presentation.
Why This Project Matters
Whether proposing a new policy, strategic initiative, or operational change, professionals often present recommendations in the form of a summary—before any presentation or deep dive. Being able to communicate a thoughtful solution in one page can set your idea apart and make the difference between acceptance and rejection.
Tips for Writing the Executive Summary
- Write it last—but revise it first: Write the body of your case first, then draft the summary, and return to it after your slide deck is finalized.
- Make it skimmable: Use short paragraphs, headers, and bold keywords if formatting allows.
- Avoid fluff: No filler, no justifications, no throat-clearing. Just the essentials.
- Focus on logic: The summary should read like a fast-forwarded case: problem → options → decision → how → why it’ll work.
The 7 Components of the PACADI Executive Summary
Section | Purpose |
---|---|
1. Business Problem | State the core challenge clearly and succinctly. What is broken or needs improvement? |
2. Recommended Solution | Provide a one-sentence summary of your team’s proposed course of action. |
3. Alternatives Considered | List 2–3 viable alternatives. Avoid straw men. |
4. Stakeholder-Focused Criteria | Show your evaluation lens: what matters to those impacted (cost, time, equity, etc.) |
5. Weighted Decision Matrix | Briefly explain how alternatives were scored using your criteria. Consider including a table or chart. |
6. Implementation Plan | Outline major steps and timing. Keep it high-level (e.g., 3–5 bullets). |
7. Risks and Mitigation | Identify top risks and how they’ll be addressed. Focus on what would matter to stakeholders. |
