Overview
MCOM 320 will be one of the most useful courses you take at BYU! Writing and speaking clearly, concisely, and correctly will help you achieve success in your profession AND in your personal life.
Business success, however, is not the main outcome for BYU Marriott School of Business students. Your goal should be to embrace the vision of BYU Marriott School to "transform the world through Christlike leadership." As you engage in the M COM 320 lessons, notice that you can become a Christlike communicator who will transform the world through Christlike communication.
The textbook introduction defines communication as a central leadership skill that leverages your other strengths, even "seemingly unrelated ones like technical competence or strategic development." Powerful communication skills enhance your leadership skills.
You may think that advancements in artificial intelligence mean that you do not have to work on your writing or presenting skills. If that is your mindset, shift it. Artificial intelligence is a great tool, but it is like a calculator. You have to know the functions to use to get the calculator to work properly. MCom 320 will help you develop those critical thinking and communication skills necessary to succeed in a digital world.
If you carefully prepare for class and apply the principles you learn from the text, in-class activities, quizzes, and assignments, you can communicate for impact, be a top hire, become a leader, build relationships, and become Christlike communicators who value all regardless of ethnicity, sexual orientation, or outward appearance.
MCom 320 welcomes all. Treat everyone in this class with respect.
As he emphasized that we demonstrate our discipleship by how we interact with others, President Russell M. Nelson, in his April 2023 General Conference address entitled "Peacemakers Needed" stated,
"The gospel net is the largest net in the world. God has invited all to come unto Him, 'black and white, bond and free, male and female' (2 Nephi 26:33). There is room for everyone. However, there is no room for prejudice, condemnation, or contention of any kind.
My dear brothers and sisters, the best is yet to come for those who spend their lives building up others. Today I invite you to examine your discipleship within the context of the way you treat others. I bless you to make any adjustments that may be needed so that your behavior is ennobling, respectful, and representative of a true follower of Jesus Christ."
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Doctrinal Topics covers the importance of Diversity and Inclusion gospel topic essay states,
"Regardless of ethnicity or outward appearance, all Church members are united in the knowledge that they are children of a Heavenly Father. They know He loves each of His children equally. This knowledge builds a feeling of unity in every building and worship service around the world and ties all members of the Church together."
M COM 320 completes the BYU requirement for advanced writing and oral communication, so you should expect this course to contain assignments that will provide ample opportunities to practice your writing. But, just like any other skill, as you practice and implement powerful feedback from TAs and your professor, you will become a better writer. In addition to receiving feedback from us, you should also seek feedback from trusted roommates, siblings, friends, teachers, or parents. Trusted means they will give you the feedback you NEED to hear, not necessarily the feedback you WANT to hear. Consider all feedback a gift that will help you improve your writing.
